Requirement

As part of an existing upgrade to Microsoft Exchange a Legal organisation wanted to improve their productivity by allowing secure remote access to their email environment.

Our partner providing the Microsoft Exchange upgrade, tasked Secure Advice with designing and provisioning the solution.

Solution

A new Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway server was deployed on the customer’s network to securely publish the Microsoft Outlook Web App, Outlook Anywhere and Active Sync from the exchange server to the Internet.

Microsoft Outlook Web App (formally Outlook Web Access) allows the customer to access their email via a web browser from any PC, secured by SSL.

Microsoft Outlook Anywhere tunnels communication to the exchange server over SSL allowing the customer to utilise the full functionality of Microsoft Outlook installed on their laptops whilst away from the office. With Internet connectivity this provides real-time communication to the corporate Exchange server simply by opening outlook and without requiring the user to perform any other actions such as establishing a VPN.

Microsoft ActiveSync in conjunction with mail applications on the customers’ smart phones allows access to send and receive emails from mobile handsets. With real time push alerting the customer is instantly informed of new messages ensuring that the solicitors are never out of reach.

Microsoft UAG Deployment

Requirement

An IT reseller was tasked by their client, a local government, with upgrading their Microsoft Exchange environment and as part of the solution providing secure remote access to email.

However, the customer did not want a point solution and with a roll out of Windows 7 in the near future the customer wanted to ensure the remote access solution could expand to meet the future requirements of the business.

In addition the customer wanted to ensure that the remote access solution was configured with high availability and that any load balancing could be provided using the customers existing hardware load balancers.

Solution

The IT reseller outsourced the design and delivery of the remote access aspect of the project to Secure Advice.

Based upon the customers’ requirements Secure Advice designed and deployed a two node Microsoft Forefront Unified Access Gateway (UAG) array, load balanced using the customers existing hardware load balancers.

To meet the immediate requirements of the customer Microsoft UAG was configured to provide secure remote access to email via Outlook Web App. This was configured with a familiar OWA look and feel to minimise the impact on users. To ensure flexible working access to email was also configured via Microsoft Outlook Anywhere and Microsoft ActiveSync.

To meet the near future requirements of remote access to the network Microsoft UAG was configured with a web portal providing users with the option to choose the internal applications or file shares they wished to access.

With UAGs’ built in support for Microsoft Direct Access this completed the solution by meeting the customer’s long term requirements to provide remote access via Windows 7.

Microsoft ISA 2006 migration to TMG

Customer Requirements

A migration of an ISA 2006 legacy deployment to Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG). The existing ISA 2006 solution was known to have stability issues with NLB which had left the customer with only a single node.

The customer required the solution to be stable, resilient and scalable to meet the growing needs of the business and implemented with minimal downtime and in a short timescale.

Solution

A new Microsoft Forefront TMG cluster was deployed and the policy migrated from the existing Microsoft ISA solution. A new NLB configuration was created and services migrated from the single node to virtual addresses on the cluster.

Additionally assisted the customer with the configuration of their virtual environment and switch infrastructure to resolve the NLB issues.
